Day-Long Wait For Dublin A&E

Patients at two Dublin hospitals are waiting over a full day - up to 28 hours on average - before being admitted through their emergency departments (EDs), according to latest statistics from the HSE.

The figures revealed the average ED waiting time for a patient in Beaumont Hospital in the Capital is currently 28.2 hours.

The findings are part of the HSE "league table" of trolley waits comprising 10 hospitals that account for over 30% of average daily attendances at EDs around the country.

Average waiting time through A&E for admitted patients at St James's Hospital in Dublin is 12 hours, and the average wait time for admitted patients at St Vincent's Hospital is seven hours.

This week has also seen a new report warning that at least half of antibiotic use in hospitals is inappropriate. In a new report published yesterday by the national Health Protection Surveillance Centre guidelines were put forward for better practice in hospitals in Ireland.

The report warned, in addition to promoting antimicrobial resistance, excessive or inappropriate use of antibiotics is associated carried implications for patient safety.

It recommended all acute hospitals develop an "antimicrobial stewardship programme" along with national treatment guidelines and that there be restricted availability of specific antibiotics within hospitals.
