Mater Hospital Staff Stage Protest

Staff at the Mater Private hospital in Dublin are to stage a protest today over pay cuts.

Members of Siptu and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) are expected to conduct their strike action from 1pm until 2pm this afternoon after management imposed 5% to 7.5% pay cuts imposed.

Yesterday, staff at the Mater Private hospital served strike notice that they say will involve a full withdrawal of their labour from the start of next month. The hospital has a staff of about 900, although not all are members of Siptu and the INMO, formerly the INO.

Speaking today, INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Albert Murphy said: "These pay cuts are totally unnecessary and we will continue to seek their removal as we believe that this is an example of cheap opportunism, where an employer seeks to exploit the long standing goodwill of employees."

According to Paul Bell, SIPTU Health Sector Organiser "The Mater Private is a profitable company and has refused to enter any meaningful dialogue with SIPTU and the INMO on these pay cuts." He said: "The focus of our dispute is the failure of management to negotiate with the unions as required by existing agreements regarding wage rates and security of employment."

This action will commence on Monday, February 1st, 2010 but will be preceded by a lunch time protest from 1.00 to 2.00pm today at the hospital.
