Irish Tennis Player Makes History

An Irish tennis player has earned a place in the history books after winning a match at a grand slam competition.

The 25-year-old Louk Sorensen became the first Irishman to win a grand slam match in 25 years when he defeated Yen-Hsun Lu in the first-round of the Australian Open.

Sorensen played his way into the main draw of a major tournament for the first time in qualifying last week and continued his dream run in Melbourne by beating a player ranked almost 200 places higher 6-4 3-6 6-2 6-1.

He is the first player Ireland has produced that has won a match at a grand slam since Californian-born Matt Doyle won during the 1985 Australian Open. Sorensen, ranked 287 in the world, defied the odds to bring that record to an end.

Ireland almost had two men in the main draw but the other hopeful Conor Niland was beaten in the last round of qualifying.

Louk's father Sean Sorensen is the current captain of the Ireland Davis Cup team. He played in the first round of Wimbledon in 1977.

Meanwhile, in other sporting news, Brian O'Driscoll has won the Irish Independent and Croke Park Hotel Sportstar of the Year competition.

At a dazzling award ceremony last night the Irish rugby star claimed his prize after 2009 saw the Ireland national rugby team claim a historic Grand Slam with O'Driscoll at the helm.
