Gardaí Question Hit And Run Suspect

The driver of a car involved in a hit-and-run incident which claimed the life of a young student yesterday has been questioned by gardai.

The man presented himself to gardai yesterday, only hours after the tragic incident. Gardai interviewed the man yesterday afternoon.

During the incident, which resulted in the death of popular student Joe McLaughlin, the driver had failed to remain at the scene of the collision, which happened at 4.40am at Tiernaleague, Carndonagh.

Mr McLaughlin is survived by his parents, Willie Joe, a farmer, and Mary, a retired nurse, and three sisters.

A post-mortem examination was carried out on the body of the 23-year-old student at Letterkenny Hospital yesterday. He was struck just a few minutes walk from his home. A passing taxi driver discovered the body and had raised the alarm.

Gardai at Buncrana are still appealing for witnesses to the fatal collision and anyone with information is asked to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074-9320540, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
