Lenihan Admitted To Hospital
Irish Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has admitted himself to hospital complaining of losing sleep and experiencing discomfort with a suspected hernia.
The minister was scheduled for admittance into the Mater Private Hospital later this week for an operation but went in early yesterday instead.
His hospital visit comes in the wake of a difficult period for the minister, which has seen three Budgets in 14 months, the introduction of the controversial NAMA legislation, bank guarantee schemes, fallout from the FÁS scandal, and severe economic decline.
Mr Lenihan was absent from the Dail as his public sector pay cut was passed by the Government by 80 votes to 69.
The minister attended the Oireachtas finance committee Christmas dinner in Fire Restaurant on Tuesday night, where he was reported to be in good form.
A spokesman for his department declined to comment on the Minister's condition, but it is understood he was taken to hospital yesterday morning.
However, despite his current illness, Mr Lenihan had some good news today in an announcement by the Central Statistics Office which said Ireland had came out of recession with the last quarter showing growth of 0.3%.
This means Ireland is not the last G20 country to emerge from the global recession as the UK continues to battle decline.

Harney Consider's Legal Action Over Comments
The Minister for Health, Mary Harney, is believed to be contemplating legal action after personal comments by journalist Nell McCafferty were broadcast on Newstalk last week. A spokesman for Ms Harney confirmed today the “matter is the hands of her lawyers”.

NAMA 'Essential', Says EU Commissioner
The controversial NAMA plan has been described as 'essential' for tackling Ireland's banking crisis, according to the EU's economy chief. Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia called for the Dáil to agree to implement the new agency as soon as possible.

Irish Exchequer Targets Financial Crisis
The Irish Finance Minister Brian Lenihan (pictured) has begun to detail a series of radical spending cuts and tax increases. The price of 20 cigarettes is to increase by 25c tonight and the price of diesel is also set to change, increasing by five cents per litre. Both increases are VAT inclusive.
