Bishops Meet To Discuss Murphy Report

Ireland's Catholic bishops are meeting for the first time since the publication of the Murphy report into the Church's handling of clerical child abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese.

The scheduled two-day winter conference in Maynooth is expected to focus on the damning report.

Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, will be attending the meeting. Yesterday he met with Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin to discuss the report.

Following the meeting, Dr Leanza expressed his "shock and dismay" at the report's findings" and condemned the abuse.

Bishop of Limerick Donal Murray, who is already in Rome, is expected to offer his resignation to Pope Benedict XVI this week. There has also been increasing speculation that another of Dublin's auxiliary bishops, Bishop Eamonn Walsh, may also resign, although he told RTÉ yesterday that he would not comment on the reports.

Cardinal Sean Brady and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin are due to fly to Rome tomorrow for a meeting with the Pope at the Vatican on Friday. They are expected to speak to the media afterwards.
