Martin 'Wages War' Over Lisbon

The Foreign Affairs Minister has said 'No' supporters' claims that the minimum wage will be reduced if the Lisbon Treaty is passed are wrong.

He has branded it as one of the biggest lies being spread about the agreement.

Michael Martin's comments came as tempers flared and arguments raged around the referendum scheduled for this Friday.

Speaking earlier today during a Dublin public debate, the Minister referred to a campaign poster, which suggested the minimum wage would be reduced under the treaty.

Mr Martin also attacked the "extraordinary duplicity and cynicism" of Sinn Féin which, he claimed, affected to be pro-Europe but anti-Lisbon in the Republic, while in the North it had opposed every European treaty.

The debate was taking place in front of a vocal crowd in the window of Arnotts department store on Dublin's Henry Street.

Sinn Féin were joined by MEP Joe Higgins from the Socialist Party and Libertas leader Declan Ganley in the 'No' camp, while Fine Gael's MEP Mairead McGuinness and EU Parliament President Pat Cox joined the Foreign Minister on the 'Yes' side.

Minister Martin said the 'Yes' side is now answering lots of questions from voters about the issue and stressed the Government with the Oireachtas determines the level of the minimum wage.

Earlier in the week, the war of words almost turned physical as pro Libertas campaigner and Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary and Mr Ganley were said to have almost come to blows during a debate over the issue on Sunday.
