Teenager Stabbed In Stomach
A 15-year-old boy has been treated in hospital after being stabbed in the stomach in a Cumbria town. A youth has been arrested after the incident which took place on Stramongate Bridge, in Kendal on Thursday afternoon. The teen was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, where his condition is described as 'stable'. A Cumbria Police spokesman said a local youth was being questioned in connection with the incident.
Four Arrests After Major Drug Seizure
Four arrests have been made following a major drugs raid in County Durham. Police targeted a number of properties in the Darlington area on Thursday night as a result of a long-running intelligence-led operation. Officers made what they described as "undoubtedly one of the biggest seizures of Class A drugs ever to take place in County Durham". Three local men and a woman, all in their 30s, are being questioned.
Cold Start to Winter
Temperatures from the Met Office have revealed that the UK has had the coldest start to winter in over 30 years. The UK average temperature for the first third of December has been only 1.7 degrees C compared to the long term average of 5.2 degrees C. The cold temperatures are in stark contrast to the recent run of very mild winters that have been dominant across the UK. The last time the UK average temperatures gave such a cold start to December was in 1976 when the average temperature was a chilly 0.8 degrees C. The Met Office seasonal forecast predicted the cold start to the winter season with milder conditions expected during January and February - although still with the chance of cold weather at times.
District Judges Appointed
HM the Queen has appointed Philip John Dixon to be a District Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Jack Straw MP. The Right Honourable The Lord Judge, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales has assigned him to the South Eastern Circuit, based at Bow County Court with effect from Monday 19 January 2009. John David Neaves has also been appointed as a District Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, Mr Straw MP. He has been assigned him to the Northern Circuit, based at Salford County Court with effect from Monday 19 January 2009.
Go-Ahead For Raynesway Park Junction Improvement
Vital improvements to a major road junction on the A6 in Derby were given the go-ahead by Transport Minister Andrew Adonis today, bringing the construction of a business park that will create thousands of jobs a step closer. The scheme at Raynesway Park junction, where the A6 Alvaston Bypass meets the A5111 Raynesway in Derby, will reduce congestion and allow local roads to cope with the increased traffic flows from the new Raynesway development that was recently granted planning consent - subject to the junction improvements.

Snow And Ice Sweeps The UK
Large parts of the UK have been affected by snow and ice as the current cold weather snap continues. The Met Office has issued warnings of heavy snow for northern Scotland, Wales and east England, while there are warnings of widespread icy conditions across Northern Ireland, west Wales and south-west England.

Britain Experienced 'Coldest Winter For A Decade'
Mild weather is expected to see out what remains of winter, the Met Office has said. However, despite this, it is expected to be the coldest UK winter since 1995/96, the provisional Met figures has shown. The low temperatures have also been accompanied at times by heavy snow.

Winter weather warning alert
Wintry weather warnings have been issued for all parts of the UK except for the south east. Roads were closed across England last night as several inches of snow fell. Britain and Ireland are to face a cold spell of weather that will see temperatures hover around zero in some parts as biting winds, sleet and snow are expected as far south as Kent.

UK and Ireland brace for cold snap
Freezing temperatures and snow look set to hit much of the UK and possibly parts of Ireland, with the cold spell lasting for several days, the Met Office has said. Next week many parts will see a major change to the weather as a strong northerly wind is expected to bring very low temperatures.

Met Office Records Hottest Temperatures Since 2006
The Met Office has recorded the hottest temperatures since 2006 in England. Data taking today 1 July in parts of the southeast and central areas of the UK have seen temperatures rise over 30 degrees. Other regions have already experienced 34 degrees, with London expected to reach 35 or 36 degrees.
