Sinn Fein councillor targeted in petrol bomb attack

The home of a Sinn Fein councillor has been targeted in a petrol bomb attack overnight.

Councillor Dessie Ward was inside his Edenderry Park home in Banbridge with his mother and younger brother when the device was thrown at the property at around 11.45pm.

No one was injured in the attack however scorch damage was caused to the front door of the house.

Speaking on Tuesday, Cllr. Ward said: “I have no doubt that this attack was a deliberate attempt to try and kill myself and my family carried out by unionist paramilitaries.

“This is not an isolated attack. Nationalists in the Banbridge area have frequently been attacked and intimidated. Across the six counties in recent weeks there has been a sustained unionist paramilitary campaign against Catholics and nationalists."

Councillor Ward was elected to Banbridge district council in May and is Sinn Fein's only sitting councillor in the chamber.
