UEFA begins disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea
UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Premiership leaders Chelsea Football Club, it has been announced today.
The European football governing body issued a statement stating that the club, manager Jose Mourinho, assistant manager Steve Clarke and club security official Les Miles had been charged with "bringing the game into disrepute".
The charges relate to the UEFA Champions League first leg match between FC Barcelona and Chelsea in Spain in February. Following the match, which Barcelona won 2-1, Jose Mourinho claimed that he saw Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard enter the room of Swedish referee Anders Frisk.
Chelsea sent a complaint to UEFA after the match. Anders Frisk announced his retirement shortly afterwards, reportedly because he had received death threats against him and his family from supporters.
UEFA announced today that they are launching disciplinary proceedings against Mourinho, Clarke and Miles for making "false declarations".
A statement said: "By further disseminating these wrong and unfounded statements, Chelsea FC allowed its technical staff to deliberately create a poisoned and negative ambience amongst the teams and to put pressure on the refereeing officials."
Chelsea beat Barcelona 4-2 in the second leg match at Stamford Bridge almost two weeks ago. They are due to meet Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the competition.
Chelsea could face a warning or a fine, although UEFA also has the authority to annul the result, order the match to be re-played and even disqualify Chelsea from the competition altogether.
The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body will deal with the disciplinary case on March 31.
A statement on Chelsea's web site said that they had received the charge from UEFA and would be reviewing their position before responding.

London's congestion charge zone increases
Despite criticism, London's congestion charge zone has been virtually doubled in size. The zone, which costs £8 a day to enter, includes Bayswater, Chelsea Kensington, Knightsbridge, and Notting Hill. London Mayor Ken Livingstone hopes that the tariff will help reduce traffic in the newly expanded zone by up to 15%.
