Murphy honoured for peace process work
Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Paul Murphy, has been honoured by Ireland’s largest peace charity in recognition of his work on the Northern Ireland peace process.
Co-operation Ireland awarded Mr Murphy with their Peace Dove award during a ceremony in New York on Tuesday as the Secretary of State began a series of engagements marking the annual St Patrick’s Day celebrations.
Mr Murphy said: “I feel deeply honoured to accept this award from an organisation which has done so much to build peace in Ireland. To be named in the company of President McAleese, George Mitchell and John Hume, friends of the peace process and whom I am proud to call my friends, makes the award even more special.”
Speaking of the Government’s determined commitment to the Peace Process, Mr Murphy concluded: “The Prime Minister and myself continue to believe that the political leaders who have invested so much in the peace process are as committed today as they have ever been.
“We share the vision of a new Northern Ireland, free from injustice and conflict and I believe that will come because the people of Northern Ireland, republican and nationalist, loyalist and unionist, want it to happen.”

A renewed sense of urgency evident on Thursday night as Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Prime Minister Tony Blair met in Dublin to discuss the Northern Ireland peace process. The two premiers pledged to take personal charge of a bid to break the deadlock following the return of the politicians from St Patrick's Day celebrations in Washington next week.

US President George W Bush has called on the IRA and loyalist paramilitary groups to decommission their weapons in his most demonstrative statement regarding the Northern Ireland peace process to date. Mr Bush’s first public comments are widely regarded to increase pressure on the IRA and loyalists to break the deadlock in the political process.

PREMIERS SCHEDULE TALKS ON NEXT STEP
BRITISH prime minister Tony Blair and Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern have scheduled a meeting to discuss the next step in the stalled Northern Ireland peace process. It has been confirmed that Mr Blair and Mr Ahern will meet in Downing Street on Wednesday July 4 in an attempt to prevent the collapse of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Peace People Return To Belfast
A veteran of many 'peace' rallies in the 1970s - Mairead Corrigan Maguire - one of the original anti-NI Troubles 'Peace People', has addressed a large Belfast crowd to condemn the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza. She was speaking at the weekend when the City Hall demonstration was held against the Israeli attack on the Gaza area.
