NHS dental services get funding boost

The government has announced a further £65.2 million, on top of £1.2 billion already designated for NHS dental services, to improve dental services across the country.

Up to £35 million of the fund will to go to Primary Care Trusts to improve access, choice and quality for patients in areas that have problems. Thirty million has been earmarked for Information Technology to integrate dentistry within the national IT programme, and around £200,000 will go to develop dental leadership skills within Strategic Health Authorities and Primary Care Trusts.

Health Minister Rosie Winterton said: "Today's announcement will allow more patients to see and be treated by NHS dentists. This funding will be targeted at areas with particular access problems."

The funding comes on top of the £9 million announced last month for the NHS Support Team to assist with NHS dentistry.

Professor Raman Bedi, the Chief Dental Officer for England, said: "We are committed to improving the service nationally and locally and have made a good start, but we need to maintain the momentum. This investment is another key step forward in our modernisation plans."
