Two firefighters injured by crowd in west Belfast

Two firefighters have been injured after being attacked by a gang of youths as they attended a fire in west Belfast.

Around 30 youths attacked fire crews who were called to two blazes at the same derilict building on Lady Mar Walk off the Grosvenor Road on Monday evening.

A spokesman for the Fire Service said that as a consequence only half the attending fire crew were able to deal with the blaze as their colleagues had to deal with a hostile crowd throwing stones and attempting to steal equipment from their vehicles.

During the incident one fire officer was punched in the face while another was hit by a stone during the trouble.

The fire, which had engulfed a derelict building adjacent to an occupied house, is believed to have been started deliberately.
