Belfast to benefit from record road improvements

A record £800,000 is set to be spent on Belfast's roads in the coming year.

The figure was revealed by Deputy Divisional Roads Manager, Tom McCourt who said that the record level of spending would result in widespread improvements in roads in the Castlereagh area of the city.

He said: "This investment is possible as structural maintenance spending across Northern Ireland is at an all time high of almost £70 million each year, which is not far off the £75 million envisaged by the Regional Transportation Strategy.

"Just a couple of years ago, the average budget was £45 million which is an indication of how far we have come – although there is still a long way to go."

Among the improvement as a result of the spending, a road improvement scheme at Saintfield Road/Cairnshill Road junction is already underway while there are plans for work at Church Road, Dundonald and local transport and safety measures are also planned at Gilnahirk Road.
