Amnesty Claims Shannon Accepted Rendition Flights
Amnesty International has claimed it has evidence linking three aircraft involved in US rendition flights to Shannon Airport.
The human rights group has published a report on Europe's role in rendition and secret detention as part of a week of events to mark International Day Against Torture.
Their latest report accuses a number of European states of either turning a blind eye to rendition or actively participating in it and highlights six cases, three of which have links to Shannon Airport.
The human rights campaigners say Ireland will continue to be complicit in acts of kidnap and torture so long as the Taoiseach allows Shannon to be used by the US for rendition flights.
In the case of one man, Abu Omar, the report says the aircraft that took him from Germany to Egypt eventually returned to the US through Shannon.
In the case of another man, Khaled al-Maqtari, the report says the plane which took him from Iraq to Afghanistan had previously stopped in Shannon.
And in a third case, Amnesty says the aircraft that took Khaled el-Masri from Macedonia to Afhganistan had also stopped at Shannon.
The Department of Foreign Affairs responed saying the Government is completely opposed to the practice of the rendition of prisoners.
In a statement, it said no evidence has ever been produced that any person has ever been subject to extraordinary rendition through Ireland.

Sextuplet Passes Away
One of Ireland's first sextuplets has died. It was revealed today that one of Nuala Conway's four girls - born along with two boys on 22 May - passed away at a local hospital in the North. Their publicist Max Clifford confirmed the news and said: "Our hearts go out to the mum and dad and we hope that the others are going to be fine," he said.

Piping Of Shannon Water To Dublin Opposed
The development of a major reservoir and waterway, fed by the River Shannon, (see: Shannon To Be Harnessed For Water Supply) has not been universally welcomed. There have been calls for an examination of the potential environmental and economic consequences of Dublin City Council's plans to draw water supplies from the River Shannon from 2016.
