New Permanent Garda Commissioner Named

Nóirín O'Sullivan has been officially named as the Garda Commissioner, following a competition for the role run by the Public Appointments Service.

Ms O'Sullivan had been interim commissioner since March when Martin Callinan stepped down, but had to undergo two rounds of interviews.

The Public Appointments Service (PAS) advertised the job both nationally and internationally, however, following the two rounds of interviews by a panel established by the PAS, Ms O'Sullivan was the sole recommendation for the role.

Connacht Sentinel Publishes Its Last Edition

The Connacht Sentinel has been published for the last time with the closure of the Connacht Tribune media group in Galway.

The paper has been a weekly Tuesday publication for 89 years, with its first edition coming out in 1925 when it was launched as a sister paper to the Connacht Tribune.

However, while the paper will no longer be published, it is understood that many of its features will continue to appear in the Galway City Tribune from next week.

Taoiseach To Seek Cross-Border Inquiry

The Taoiseach is said to be keen to establish a cross-border inquiry into alleged sexual abuse by republican paramilitaries.

It is understood that Enda Kenny has asked Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald to meet with her Northern counterpart, David Ford, to discuss how an inquiry might be set up.

It is over allegations that members of the IRA, accused of rape and sexual abuse, were moved south.

CSO Publishes 2018 Crime Detection Figures
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has published crime detection figures for the first time in four years. The figures are relating to 2018, with detection rates for murder incidents at 72%. Detection of controlled drug offences represent a high of 85%, while sexual offence detection remained low at just 11%.
