Taoiseach Dissed For Borrowing Comments
Ministers are rallying around the Taoiseach who is being criticised after he said people went mad borrowing money here during the boom.The comments from Enda Kenny at the World Economic Forum in Davos have caused outrage with the Opposition.
However, Ministers from both sides of the government are supporting the Taoiseach.
Minister Leo Varadkar said clearly some people did borrow too much.
And Social Protection Minister Joan Burton says Enda Kenny did not mean to offend or contradict his State of the Nation speech when he said people were not to blame.
Overwhelming Response From Diving Community
The Irish Coastguard has said it has received an overwhelming response from the diving community to an appeal to join the search for two missing fishermen off Cork.Coastguard manager Declan Geoghegan said the search teams now have enough divers and said further volunteers should not travel for the moment.
He said it was heartening that so many divers have made themselves available.
National Electronic GP Referral System Launched
General Practitioners can now refer their patients to consultants using a new electronic system instead of sending a traditional letter or fax.
The system has been developed to ensure faster and more efficient referrals.
It is also intended to prevent a repeat of the scandal at Tallaght Hospital in 2010 when it was discovered that thousands of GP referral letters for orthopaedic surgery had not been processed.
The new national electronic referral system has been developed by the National Cancer Control Programme and the Irish College of General Practitioners.

Afghanistan Veteran On Rape Charge
A bomb-blasted former soldier has appeared in court in Belfast charged with rape and false imprisonment. Gerald Verner, 23, of Forthriver Park, who was deafened by a bomb in Afghanistan, is also accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm, sexual assault and threats to kill against the same woman.

Contracts Awarded For Raising Trawlers
The government has awarded a contract to raise two fishing vessels, which sank off the southeast coast of Ireland. The contract for raising the 'Pere Charles' and the 'Maggie B' has been awarded to north Co Dublin company Irish Diving Contractors.

Scheduled to take place throughout April and May 2026, the project is designed to enhance public safety and preserve the tower as a high-quality amenity for the local swimming community.

New Camera System Launches At Luas Junction
Ireland's first automated Red Light Camera System, located at the junction of Blackhall Place and the Luas Red Line/Benburb Street, has launched today, Thursday. An Garda Siochána's PULSE system is linked to the Camera System at Blackhall Place and motorists breaking the red light will automatically receive three penalty points.
