Consultants Demand 9% Rise In Spending

Senior hospital staff have called for the appointment of more consultants and an increase in spending amidst the Government's present economic concerns.

The Irish Hospital Consultant's Association also said an additional 9% funding was needed to match previous assurances in the last Budget, as they said the health service should not be denied funds, even in times of a tighter national economy.

However, a recent survey of general practitioners by the Irish Medical Times has revealed GPs believe disability and hospital services will be the first to be hit by possible cutbacks in the Government's up coming emergency Budget.

According to the Medical Times, disability was cited as the number one area that was under threat from cuts, with 30% of GPs indicating it as an area that was likely to be targeted.

Hospital services, primary care, and management and administration were also seen as areas that are likely to feel the axe.
