Decision Made On Troops' Chad Deployment Date

Fifty Irish Army Rangers are to be deployed to Chad next Thursday, it has been confirmed.

Irish Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea was informed of the plan during a meeting in Paris with Lieutenant General Pat Nash, the Irish commander of the 14-state EU force.

The EU force, which has more than 3,700 troops from 14 countries, has a UN mandate to protect civilians, including 400,000 refugees from Darfur and displaced Chadians, in the east of the country, along Chad's border with Sudan.

The Eufor deployment restarted yesterday after being held up last December because of shortages in air and medical support and further delayed two weeks ago, when fighting began between Chadian rebels and government forces.

However, the rebels have warned that they will regard the Eufor deployment as a hostile force.
