Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald Resigns From Govt

The Tánaiste and Minister For Business Frances Fitzgerald has resigned from Government.

According to media reports, the Minister stepped down from her position after she offered her resignation to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar during a cabinet meeting today, 28 November.

Ms Fitzgerald had been at the centre of controversy over her handling of information about a Garda whistleblower in 2015 when she was Justice Minister.

Fianna Fáil was scheduled to table a motion of no confidence against the Minister later tonight, which if successful would have triggered a snap general election.

It is understood Ms Fitzgerald will announce her resignation in the Dáil later this afternoon.
