SF: Retailers Should Be Included In Beef Talks
Sinn Fein have called for retailers to be given a say in the talks to resolve the dispute between beef farmers and meat processors.
The situation has progressed over recent weeks as farmers take a stand against falling beef prices.
Sinn Féin TD for Sligo, Leitrim, North Roscommon and South Donegal Martin Kenny said the talks are welcome but should be conducted more inclusively.
He said: "Irish retailers are key to the process of bringing beef from the farm to the dinner table. The representation of Irish beef as being of the highest quality in the world needs to be reflected in the price farmers receive.
"I have written to a number of the large retailers in Ireland asking them are they prepared to make some concessions on three important issues, namely the 30-month age limit, 70 days on Quality Assured farms and the four movement rule. These issues can significantly impact on the price farmers receive for their cattle.
"I hope that Minister Creed will be more proactive in these talks and not just a neutral observer. He is, after all, the Minister for Agriculture and should stand up for the interests of Irish farmers and not corporate multi-nationals."
Deputy Kenny concluded: "The survival of the Irish beef industry depends on the Irish farmer getting a better price for their product. Are processors and retailers prepared to take a slightly lower margin to ensure Irish farmers stay in business?"
Dublin One City One Book Choice Announced
Dublin City Council has named Tatty by Christine Dwyer Hickey as the Dublin One City One Book choice for 2020, following a very successful campaign with The Country Girls Trilogy by Edna O'Brien.
Dublin One City One Book aims to encourage everyone in Dublin to read a designated book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year. This annual project is a Dublin City Council initiative, led by Dublin City Libraries and encourages reading for pleasure through a myriad of free public events throughout the month, held in libraries, galleries, theatres and museums. Tatty will be available to borrow from all public libraries nationwide.
Author Christine Dwyer Hickey said: "I'm absolutely delighted. Tatty is a novel that is connected to the city of Dublin in so many ways – it's an honour to have it chosen as Dublin One City One Book for 2020."
Mairead Owens, Dublin City Librarian added: "Tatty is a book about a Dublin childhood, but it is also utterly universal in its themes and will appeal to anyone in our city who picks it up during our festival month next April. We work hard to choose the right book every year and we've struck gold with this exquisite story, so expertly woven by Christine Dwyer Hickey, one of Dublin’s finest authors."
