Arrest As Drugs Worth €107k Seized In Cork

A man has been arrested in Cork after drugs were seized in the city's railway station.

Gardaí seized €107,000 worth of suspected cocaine and heroin at Kent Railway Station on Wednesday evening, 04 September.

The drugs were discovered when officers stopped and searched a man in his 30s, who was arrested at the scene and brought to Mayfield Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

The discovery is linked to an ongoing operation into the sale and supply of drugs in the Mayfield area.

Labour Backs Calls For More EU Economic Stimulus

The Labour Party has welcomed calls for EU governments to engage in more economic stimulus.

The comments were made by Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, at the European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs.

Labour Finance spokesperson Joan Burton TD said: "I welcome Christine Lagarde's argument for the European Central Bank to be agile and to react to changes in the world. While we come from different political traditions, she managed to be non-partisan and to make evidence-based decisions while at the IMF, where she introduced a focus on gender, inequality and climate. I welcome her desire to focus on these issues again at the ECB.

"Labour agrees that Europe and the Eurozone needs an economic stimulus, and part of that stimulus should be government-led investment in ageing infrastructure, improvements in schools and medical facilities, and investing in green technology like energy efficiency and renewable energy, which will provide new sustainable jobs. It makes sense, as Lagarde suggests, for EU governments to co-operate in this stimulus, such as creating an EU-wide market for investment in climate technology and green enterprises.

"Europe also needs a stimulus to consumer demand, which should be achieved by raising the wages and living standards of Europe's lowest paid workers, not least the 23% of workers in Ireland who earn less than 60% of median average wages. Ireland has the third highest level of low pay in the European Union, and this is both unjust and unsustainable with our high living costs, especially exorbitant rents. We need to accelerate the move to an evidence-based Living Wage as the minimum for all workers.

"I hope that if Ms Lagarde is confirmed as the first woman President of the European Central Bank, she will also signal other real changes to the ECB's policies, including a much greater focus on unemployment, which is part of the mission of the US Federal Reserve and other central banks worldwide."

School Sectaries To Rally In Athlone, Donegal and Dublin

School secretaries will stage a rally at education minister Joe McHugh's office in Letterkenny, County Donegal this Saturday, while simultaenous rallies take place at the education department headquarters in Dublin and at the department's office in Athlone.

Each event will feature a small number of speeches, and wrap up after about 30 minutes.

The rallies takes place as Fórsa prepares to reveal the result of a nationwide ballot for industrial action in its campaign for fair pay and working conditions for school secretaries. The ballot outcome will be announced publicly on Monday 09 September.

The union balloted its members over the summer after education department officials refused to discuss proposals to overcome a two-tier pay system that leaves most earning just €12,500 a year, with irregular, short-term contracts that force them to sign on during the summer holidays and other school breaks.

According to the union, this is because of an antiquated and discriminatory employment status, foisted upon school secretaries in 1978, which gives a minority directly-employed public service status, while the majority are employed by school management boards, which determine their pay and conditions.

The rallies will take place as follows:

• 1pm, Saturday 7th September, Department of Education and Skills, Cornamaddy, ATHLONE, N37 X659.

• 1pm, Saturday 7th September, Minister McHugh's office at Grier House, Lower Main Street, LETTERKENNY, County Donegal.

• 1pm, Saturday 7th September, Department of Education and Skills head office, Marlborough Street, DUBLIN 1, D01 RC96.
