Housing Minister Urged To Outline Additional Staff For New Letting Laws

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy has been called on to provide councils with more staff to help enforce short-term letting regulations which come into force next month.

The rules, which will be introduced on 01 July, will see planning laws implemented for short term lets.

If you are in a Rent Pressure Zone under the short-term letting legislation, or if you short term let your own home for less than 90 days there is no change.

If you are letting your own home for more than 90 days, you will need planning permission and if you are letting a second property you will also need planning permission.

For short term lets in your own home for more 90 days granting planning permission will be open for consideration by local authorities.

In cases of commercial short term lets property owners will also have to apply for planning permission.

The Housing Committee voted in favour of these changes in April.

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has issued a warning to Minister Murphy over council staff levels ahead of the new laws.

Deputy Ó Broin added: "These new regulations will have little impact unless there is an adequate team of planning and enforcement staff to ensure the new rules are implemented.

"Councils were short term lets are more prevalent, such as Dublin City, Galway, and Cork, must have sufficient staff to deal with the new rules from July 1st.

"I have written to Minister Murphy today asking him to outline what additional staff he has provided to councils in order to enforce the new laws."
