Applications Invited For Communicating Europe Initiative

Voluntary organisations, educational bodies and civil society groups are being invited to apply for funding under the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Communicating Europe Initiative.

Making the call, the Minister for European Affairs Helen McEntee, said: "The Communicating Europe Initiative is aimed at deepening public awareness of the role the EU plays in our daily lives. This was one of the key messages that we received from the general public from our Future of Europe Citizen's Dialogue process held last year. The Irish public wants to understand and have access to quality information on European issues and particularly at a regional and local level.

"Projects who are interested in applying for funding under this initiative, should be seeking to communicate European Issues, the role of the European Union and Ireland's Place in Europe. €100,000 has been made available under the scheme this year.

"I am delighted to announce the launch of this funding today. A key part of my role is to promote and encourage debate around Ireland's place in a future of Europe that looks beyond Brexit; and how we can continue to build the home we have helped to create for the last 46 years."

People Left To Languish On Hospital Trolleys Will Be The Govt's Legacy – SF

The image of hundreds of thousands of people left to languish on hospital trolleys will be the legacy of the Fine Gael government, according to Sinn Féin TD Jonathan O'Brien.

The Cork North-Central TD said: "Today, there are 580 people waiting on trolleys across the state, 47 of them in Cork University Hospital.

"These numbers represent genuine human suffering. These are people who require care and treatment in some of their darkest days.

"This government seems to only care about telling us how much good work they have done. Clearly, it is nowhere near enough.

"This government, and Minister Simon Harris in particular, clearly have no grasp of the depth of the crises in Ireland today.

"Their punitive austerity agenda continues to hurt people today as an under resourced and mismanaged health service struggles to cope.

"The standard Fine Gael procedure of hiding beneath the covers until they have good news to announce will not cut it here.

"The government needs to work with the health professionals and unions to address the systemic problems in the health service and get patients off trolleys and into hospital beds."
