A2 Derry Dualling Scheme By Next Year, Says Murphy

Northern Ireland Roads Minister Conor Murphy (pictured) has suggested that an A2 dualling scheme close to the Derry City Airport could begin early next year.

At a meeting with the local council this week, the Minister provided a detailed update on his department's £5.2m investment package in the area.

He told elected officials a scheme to improve the junction of the Mullenan Road and Letterkenny Road, providing improved sightlines and a right turn lane was completed early this financial year.

"Work is progressing well on the £250,000 scheme to widen the bridge in Park and provide a cycle/footway to connect into the village," said Mr Murphy.

"Other schemes still to be carried out this financial year include a scheme to provide a right turn lane from Letterkenny Road into Killea Manor, and a scheme to widen and provide verges on the Trench Road in the vicinity of Killymallaght Road junction.

"Traffic calming measures are also proposed at Temple Road, Marlborough Road, Benview Estate, Blackburn/Woodburn Avenue and in the Bishop Street Without Area," he said.

Mr Murphy said tenders have been invited for the A2 Dualling scheme from Maydown Roundabout to the City of Derry Airport, with work is planned to commence on site next year.

At the meeting Road Service’s Divisional Roads Manager, Jim Beattie, also welcomed the continued investment in local transport and safety measures in the Derry City Council area.

He said: "Roads Service will continue to concentrate on scheme delivery in the Derry City Council area.

"We will minimise the disruption that will arise from our works and we will give motorists advance warning of road works through signage and information prior to works," added Mr Beattie.
