Republic's Road Toll Rises As Dangerous Driving Conditions Continue

Although a motorist was killed last night in Donegal, so far, there are no reports of injury in a series of crashes in the county this morning due to ice on the roads.

Parts of Co Donegal have come to a virtual standstill as severe frost and ice has left roads in many parts of the county in extremely dangerous condition.

Gardaí have advised motorists to avoid using the local roads at all - if possible - due to the adverse conditions.

The most serious incident this morning saw up to 36 vehicles reported to be involved in a multi-car pile up in Co Donegal, according to gardaí.

The collisions happened near St Johnston close to the Irish border as a result of black ice on the roads. There are no reports of any injuries.

Gardaí have stepped in to avoid further pile-ups, closing the through road from Laghy to Castlederg due to ice.

The N13 between Lifford and Letterkenney and the main Lifford to Derry road are also said to be treacherous this morning.

Meanwhile, the fatal collision between a lorry and a car happened last night at about 11.00pm on the N15 between Donegal town and Ballybofey.

An unnamed 24-year-old man died in the incident.

Today, as treacherous conditions continue, an AA Roadwatch controller, Nicola Hudson said there has been "huge number" of crashes and skids throughout Donegal this morning due to ice.

She said icy conditions and black ice are also widespread in counties Longford, Meath and Leitrim. Drivers are warned to avoid the Mullingar to Lanesborough road.
