Minister praises Victoria Square milestone
The Minister for Social Development, Margaret Ritchie today celebrated a key milestone for the Victoria Square Development Scheme with the completion of the superstructure of the 800,000 sq ft development.
At a ceremony held on site, she joined Multi-Development and Farrans Gilbert Ash to mark the occasion by placing the last piece of glass into the Victoria Square Dome.
She commented: “This is a decisive milestone. Victoria Square is already transforming the heart of the city. The glass Dome can now be seen from all angles in the city centre – already a truly iconic symbol of Victoria Square.”
The Department for Social Development selected the Victoria Square as a Comprehensive Development Scheme in July 2000. Since then, the Department has worked closely with the Developer, Multi Development, to assist with site assembly and to maximise the community and business opportunities that the scheme will bring.
The Minister said: “I am confident that this Scheme will make a difference to our city. The high quality retail and lively evening entertainment will not only attract Belfast residents but people from across the North and further afield.”
She concluded: “You only have to look around to see the skyline of cranes across the city to know that Belfast is being regenerated. My department is at the heart of this work, including on the £16 million ‘Belfast: Streets Ahead’ programme to make over the city streets and spaces. I want to see all this work bring Belfast into the premier league of European regional cities.
“This celebration has whet our appetite for what’s ahead and I look forward to the opening in March 2008.”

Study to reshape Belfast city centre launched
NIO Minister Des Browne has today announced the start of a review of Belfast city's regeneration policy following the adoption of the Victoria Square Development Scheme last month. The GB-based consultancy, G V A Grimley, has been engaged to conduct the research and is expected to report to the Department by the end of April.

Government to adopt £250m Victoria Square scheme
The government has adopted the multi-million pound Victoria Square Development Scheme in Belfast which sets out the land use framework for the effected area. The decision is described as a "major move towards revitalisation" of the city centre as the potential economic rewards are considerable, according to the NIO.

Consensus reached on Cathedral Quarter development
The Department for Social Development has said that it has “reached an understanding” with developers Dunloe Ewart on how new proposals for a retail development at Cathedral Quarter in central Belfast could be designed to co-exist with the major regeneration of Victoria Square that the Department is currently supporting.

Belfast City Centre Works Announced
Motorists who use Belfast city centre could be in line for delays at the end of January, following the approval of the next phase of roadworks. Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has announced that the next phase of the Belfast on the Move works will begin on 28 January.

New Belfast Hotel Plans Submitted
The Department of Environment has put forward an opinion to approve a new 130 bed hotel in Great Victoria Street Belfast. DOE planning officials will seek the views of Belfast City Council at a meeting later. If the proposal gets the go ahead, it will provide up to 60 jobs.
