Woman remanded over student's murder

A teenage girl has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of 18-year-old A-level student Sian Simpson who was stabbed to death in Croydon, south London.

Chelsea Bennett, 18, appeared before Croydon Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody.

A second 18-year-old woman who was arrested in connection with the murder has been released on bail.

Student Sian Simpson was stabbed in the heart while attempting to break up an argument at Mann Close in Croydon at 8pm on Tuesday. She was pronounced dead at Mayday Hospital.

Police have expressed concern about girl gangs in the area, but detectives have said that they do not believe that the killing was gang related.

The area in Croydon is frequently used to film episodes of 'The Bill' and some witnesses initially thought that they were seeing part of a location film shoot.
