Severe thunderstorms to hit Britain

Parts of Britain are expected to be hit by severe thunderstorms tonight, forecasters have predicted.

The east and southeast of the country are expected to be hit by heavy rains, which will then move north eastwards across the country later today and early on Wednesday, the Met Office warned.

Forecasters also warned that Northern Ireland, north Wales and the north of England faced the risk of disruption from the severe weather.

Rainfall of up to 50mm has been predicted for some areas, while up to 25mm of rain is expected in other areas.

Other areas of the country are expected to see a mix of sunshine and showers.

Scotland is also expected to see heavy rain on Wednesday, especially in the east of the country.
