Sheringham bailed in speeding investigation

Former England footballer Teddy Sheringham was arrested after allegedly giving false details about a speeding charge, it has emerged.

The footballer, who left West Ham at the end of the last season, is one of three Premiership footballers to have been questioned over similar offences in the past few weeks.

Scotland Yard confirmed that the 41-year-old, who was awarded an MBE last week, was interviewed by police on May 15 on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, when he attended an east London police station on appointment.

He has bailed to return in July, pending further inquiries.

Henri Brandman, Mr Sheringham's lawyer, said that his client "categorically denied" giving false details to police.

Two other West Ham players have also been arrested in connection with similar offences. Striker Bobby Zamora, 26, was arrested last Wednesday in connection with allegations that he gave false details regarding police camera footage of an apparently speeding car.

Shaun Newton, a 31-year-old midfielder, was also questioned in relation to similar allegations, two days after Sheringham was interviewed.

Both players have also been released on bail until July.

A woman was also arrested in Morden in south London on June 8 on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. She has been released on bail until September.
