Lord Eames awarded the Order of Merit

Former Church of Ireland and peace advocate Primate Robin Eames has been awarded one of Britain’s highest honours.

Lord Eames, 69, was one of an elite group being awarded the Order of Merit for exceptional contribution to the arts, learning, sciences and other areas.

He led the church during the worst years of the Troubles, and retired last December. Lord Eames became Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland in 1986. He was also a selected preacher at Oxford University the following year.

The Order of Merit was also awarded to Sir Thomas Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web, along with Lord Rees of Ludlow, President of the Royal Society.

Previous recipients of the award, founded in 1902 by Edward VII, have included Florence Nightingale, Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Edward Elgar, Mother Teresa and Baroness Thatcher.

The appointment is in the Queen’s personal gift – ministerial advice is not required.
