Former Derry GAA star dies
Former Derry GAA manager Eamon Coleman has died following a long illness.
The 59-year-old will go down in Gaelic games history as the man who guided Derry first to their sixth Ulster Football crown, then steered them to a famous victory over Cork at the 1993 All-Ireland final.
His son Gary played on the team which lifted the Sam Maguire trophy.
A native of Ballymcguigan in Derry, he won an All-Ireland minor medal in 1965 and was an Under-21 winner three years later.
He was known as a controversial character of the game, and was sensationally sacked by Derry in 1994 but returned to succeed Brian Mullins in 1999.
Coleman had later spells as manager with Longford and Cavan.
He was forced to step down as Cavan boss due to illness in 2005. He battled valiantly against cancer and appeared to have beaten the disease last year. However, the illness re-emerged in recent months and he died on Monday.
