Tuberculosis alert in Coleraine hospital
A Coleraine Hospital is on tuberculosis alert today after a member of staff contracted a rare form of the respiratory disease.
The employee from the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, contracted a multi-drug resistant form of TB. However, they are thought to be in a stable condition.
Colleagues and friends are currently being screened and a list of patients who may require testing is being drawn up.
Director of the Northern Ireland and Social Care Trust, Dr Peter Flannigan said: “Our main concern is with regard to the patients who during this period of time were treated in surgical ward one and the gynaecology ward of Causeway Hospital,” he said.
“The healthcare worker also did some work in the accident and emergency department.
“But because of the very limited contact time-wise they would have had with the public, at that stage this does not present any degree of significant risk to anybody who attended the accident and emergency department.”
Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection spread through the air that attacks the lung.
Symptoms may include chest pain and coughing up blood.

Health Minister Opens New £1.8m Causeway Hospital Unit
Health Minister Robin Swann has announced the opening of a new £1.8 million unit at Causeway Hospital, giving patients timely and direct access to surgical assessment, diagnostics and a treatment plan. The new surgical ambulatory unit will help reduce hospital admissions and attendances at Emergency Departments.

Series Of Search Operations Conducted In Claudy And L'Derry
The PSNI's Serious Crime Branch have carried a number of search operation in Claudy and L'Derry as part of an ongoing investigation into dissident republican activity. As a result of the searches, in the Learmount Road area of Claudy and the Currynierin area of L'Derry, a number of items were seized and removed for further forensic examination.

PSNI Appeal Following Fatal Collision In L'Derry
The PSNI have issued an appeal for information and witnesses following a fatal road traffic in L'Derry on Thursday, 18 April. A woman, aged in her 70s, has died in hospital following a two-car collision on the Limavady Road at approximately 4pm. The collision involved a grey Citroen C3 and blue Alfa Romeo.
