Soldier arrested over sale of ammunition

A soldier has been arrested as part of an investigation by the Metropolitan Police into the sale of army-issue ammunition.

The 27-year-old private, who has not been named, was arrested at Baker Barracks in Thorney Island near Chichester, Sussex by officers from the Met's Operation Trident unit, which investigates gun crime in black communities in London.

He is being held in custody in the Chichester area and is due to be questioned later.

Police said that the arrest was made following an investigation into the sale of 21 rounds of 9mm ammunition in the Chichester area last month.

Detective Sergeant Neil Lennon, from Operation Trident, said: "The ammunition we believe this soldier was selling would have been compatible with a number of types of firearms.

"It would undoubtedly have the potential to have an extremely harmful effect on a number of communities and Trident remains committed to tackling those who seek to profit from the misery of others."
