RSPB to showcase ‘wildlife friendly’ garden

Over the past number of months, RSPB NI staff, volunteers and professionals have been working at Hillsborough Castle to ensure that the RSPB’s garden will be completed in time for Garden Show Ireland between the 8 and 10 June.

Designed by Lorraine Robinson from Eco Centric Garden Design, the wildflower garden, to be on permanent display, is themed to be bird and wildlife friendly and particularly welcoming for sparrows.

Speaking in advance of completion, Hilary Hunter, Community Development Officer at RSPB NI said: “After much blood, sweat and tears the RSPB garden is almost ready for the grand unveiling at this weekend’s annual Garden Show Ireland. We are delighted that this will be a permanent feature of the Walled Garden at Hillsborough Castle.

“Our aim was to construct the most wildlife friendly garden possible, providing a haven and sanctuary for a rich array of birds and other creatures. Birds are already beginning to use the many nest boxes provided. Exciting features include a lime-rendered straw bale tower erected by Heritage Building Services, with enough room for birds to nest and nooks and crannies for insects and other wildlife. We have planted a range of species including a Rowan Tree and shrubs such as Viburnum, Hamamelis, Budleja and wildflowers to provide berry and nectar food. Squirrel-proof feeders have also been erected.

“We are very proud of the garden, which provides a good example of a low maintenance wildlife friendly space, and RSPB staff will be on hand at the show to provide advice on encouraging wildlife into your garden and feeding your garden birds.

“We look forward to welcoming visitor’s to the garden this weekend and also throughout the year. As a special offer, Garden Show Ireland is offering all RSPB members the special entrance fee of two for the price of one. Simply present your RSPB membership card at the ticket office to take up this special offer.”
