The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have arrived in Northern Ireland today to attend a Garden Party.

The theme of the garden party, held in the grounds of the University of Ulster in Coleraine was “the Community and Voluntary Sector” and was attended by 2,000 guests.

Arriving at the University, Her Majesty and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh were greeted by the Lord-Lieutenant of County Londonderry, Mr Denis Desmond CBE and were later joined by John McGrath, Deputy Secretary for Social Development who accompanied HRH in the garden.

Throughout the afternoon, music was provided by the band of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

To mark the occasion, Her Majesty accepted an invitation from Professor Richard Barnett, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ulster, to unveil a plaque and to sign the visitors’ book.

Bringing the visit to a close, Her Majesty accepted a gift of 24 “Castle of Mey” daffodil bulbs, named after a former holiday home of the late Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother and was presented with a posy by 10 year-old Miss Robyn McNutt, the daughter of a member of the University Staff.
