Minister welcomes knife amnesty
Criminal Justice Minister, David Hanson has welcomed the news that another 600 potentially lethal weapons have been taken off the streets of Northern Ireland during the second knife amnesty which ended on Monday December 11.
David Hanson said: “I am very pleased that the public has again taken the opportunity to dispose of knives during the second amnesty. That now means that 1500 potentially deadly weapons are out of circulation thanks to these campaigns.
“The amnesty has also raised awareness of the dangers of illegally carrying knives in public and I would again urge those who do so to stop. You are committing a crime and will face the full rigours of the law.
“Last month I announced new laws to combat knife crime and to make it more difficult to purchase a knife. I am also currently considering further measures after a recent consultation of the law on knives and will make an announcement on this in the New Year.”

Two Men Convicted In Paramilitary Crime Task Force Investigation
The PSNI have welcomed the sentencing of two men at Laganside Crown Court for a number of offences, following a major investigation into the activities of the east Belfast UVF. James McGrogan, aged 37, and 32-year-old Christopher Cullen were both convicted on Thursday 18th April, for a number of drug-related offences.

The SDLP Opposition at Stormont has said that the appointment of Richard Pengelly as Chief Executive of the Education Authority "raised a number of questions". Mr Pengelly, who has been working as Permanent Secretary at the Department of Justice, was appointed to the new role on Thursday 21 March, by Education Minister Paul Givan.
