Man acquitted of Arlene murder could face retrial

The man who was acquitted of the murder of 15-year-old Arlene Arkinson in 1994, could face retrial.

Searches for the teenager's body have today resumed and the Public Prosecution Service has said that if a body is found, then Robert Lesarian Howard, who was cleared of the murder in 2005, could face retrial.

During Howard's initial trial, the jury was not told of Howard`s history of child sex crimes dating back 40 years.

He had also been given a suspended sentence for a sex attack on another teenager in County Tyrone in 1993, which led to the murder of 14-year-old Hannah Williams in Kent in 2003 – for which he was serving a life sentence.

Arlene Arkinson went missing in 1994, after a night out, where she was reportedly seen in Robert Howard's company.

The announcement of a possible retrial came today after a report by retired Appeal Court Judge Sir John MacDermott.

The report cleared the PPS of accusations of failings in the prosecution of Robert Howard, however it added that they were right to withhold information on his previous convictions from the jury.
