Two arrested over pensioner's murder

Police investigating the murder of County Down pensioner Annie McCartan, have arrested two people.

The pair, a man and a woman, were arrested this morning in connection with the murder.

Mrs McCartan, was celebrating her 75th birthday, when she was brutally beaten and stabbed to death at her home in the Summer Hill area of Warrenpoint on June 15 2006.

Last week, BBC's Crimewatch featured a reconstruction of the pensioner's murder in a bid to encourage anyone with any information to come forward.

Mrs McCartan was last seen shortly before 3pm on the afternoon of her murder while shopping in Newry.

She travelled back to her Warrenpoint home by bus at around 3pm, when it is understood that the incident happened.

Detectives believe that Mrs McCartan knew the person who killed her.
