ARA seizes assets of alleged drug dealer
The Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) has been granted a Civil Recovery Order on assets worth around £200,000 earlier today in the High Court in Belfast in respect of the estate of the late Paul Patrick Daly.
Mr Daly, 38, was shot dead in Belfast in May 2001. In its civil action, the ARA submitted that he had derived a major part of his income from crime, including drug dealing in the Belfast area, Newry, and Antrim.
The Agency’s case was that a share of the property situated in Laurelgrove Dale, Belfast as well as all of the proceeds of an accidental death insurance policy were recoverable.
Mr Justice Coghlin made a Recovery Order in respect of 90% of the Laurelgrove Dale property and 100% of the proceeds of the insurance policy.
According to the ARA the Recovery Order was made on the consent of Jacqueline Conroy, who was Mr Daly's partner and was the beneficiary of his will.
ARA Deputy Director Alan McQuillan said: “We have been granted a Recovery Order today in this case and around £200,000 will now be recovered and recycled to help the fight against crime. This again shows that the Proceeds of Crime Act is working.
“We now look forward to seeing more and more cases being finalised in the High Court. We are also strongly encouraging respondents to settle cases as this will often be in their interest and the public interest.”

He had criminal convictions dating back to 1983, including robbery, theft, serious assaults, and firearms offences.

He had been sitting in a car with his partner and 12-year-old daughter at the front of a relative’s house when 10 shots were fired at him.
