Cardiff duo sent home following 'breach of discipline'

Cardiff City midfield pair Jeff Whitley and Phil Mulryne have been sent home following "a breach of discipline" during the build up to this weekend's World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan at Windsor Park.

The BBC claims the players returned to their hotel in the early hours of Wednesday morning, where the faced the wrath of manager Lawrie Sanchez who wants all minds focused on this weekend's game.

Striker Andy Smith, winger Ivan Sproule and defender Michael Duff have been drafted into the panel by Sanchez as replacements.

On Tuesday, the NI boss named Luton Town midfielder Stephen Robinson in his 20-man squad for the Azerbaijan fixture as well as next week's game against England.

The surprise call-up for the 30-year-old comes five years after he last played for Northern Ireland against Hungary.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Roy Carroll and defenders Chris Baird and Tony Calpadi are back in the squad after missing the abysmal 1-1 draw with Malta earlier this month.

Both defenders could end up in the starting line up if Sanchez opts to play his favoured 4-4-2 formation starting with Azerbaijan on Saturday and England the following Wednesday. Both games are at Windsor Park.

Northern Ireland squad: M Taylor (Birmingham); R Carroll (West Ham); M Ingham (Wrexham); A Hughes (Aston Villa); C Murdock (Rotherham); S Craigan (Motherwell); C Baird (Southampton); T Capaldi (Plymouth); J Whitley (Cardiff); S Davis (Aston Villa); D Johnson (Birmingham); C Brunt (Sheff Wed); S Elliott (Hull); K Gillespie (Sheff Utd); P Mulryne (Cardiff); S Robinson (Luton); D Healy (Leeds); J Quinn (Peterborough); L Feeney (Luton); S Jones (Crewe).
