Countess of Wessex’s mother dies
Mary Rhys-Jones, the mother of the Countess of Wessex, has died, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.
In a statement, the Palace said that Mrs Rhys-Jones, 71, had passed away in hospital on Sunday, after suffering a short illness.
The statement said: “Mary Rhys-Jones, wife of Christopher and mother of the Countess of Wessex, died on Sunday, August 28 after a short illness.”
The statement said that the Countess, who was at the hospital with her mother, was “deeply saddened” by the news.
It was reported in the ‘Sun’ newspaper in May that Mrs Rhys-Jones had been suffering from cancer and undergone surgery to have a tumour removed from her colon. However, although Buckingham Palace confirmed that she was in hospital, it did not confirm the illness nor the treatment she received.
Sophie Rhys-Jones married Prince Edward in 1999 and the couple became the Earl and Countess of Wessex. The couple had their first child – a girl called Louise – in November 2003.

Boy Killed By Bin Lorry While Using Zebra Crossing
A 12-year-old boy has died after being hit by a skip lorry in Devon. It is understood that the boy was struck by the lorry at about 15:10 on Thursday on Topsham Road near Countess Wear. The boy is understood to have using a zebra crossing when he was hit by the bin lorry. He received medical treatment by a passer-by before paramedics arrived.

Prince Edward's wife, the Countess of Essex, has left hospital with the couple's newborn baby boy. Sophie, 42, left Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey on Thursday. She had been recovering from a Caesarean section in a private unit in the hospital, where she gave birth to the child, the couple's second, on Monday.

Merchant remembered as 'great' independent film producer
Tributes were pouring in today from the film world following the death of legendary film producer Ismail Merchant on Wednesday.
