Irish man arrested in connection with army base bombing
An Irish man has been arrested in Spain in connection with an IRA bomb attack at a British Army base in Germany 16 years ago.
Leonard Hardy, 44, was arrested at a hotel in the resort of Torremolinos by Spanish police acting on a warrant issued by the authorities in Germany.
Reports from Spain said he will be taken to Madrid pending an extradition case.
Commenting on the arrest, Sinn Féin TD for Louth Arthur Morgan called for the immediate release of Mr Hardy.
“This man has lived openly in Ireland for many years with his family,” Mr Morgan said. “Reports indicate that he has been arrested in Spain whilst on holiday on the foot of an extradition warrant from Germany which relates to matters over a decade old.
“It is my firm view his man should be released and allowed to return home to his family in Ireland without any further delay.”
Mr Hardy’s arrest relates to the bombing of Osnabruck army base in June 1989. The base was badly damaged in the attack, however no-one was injured.
