Footballer Pennant released from prison

Premiership footballer Jermaine Pennant has been released early from prison, where he was serving a sentence for driving offences.

The Arsenal player, who is currently on loan to Birmingham City, was sentenced to three months in prison for drink driving, driving whilst disqualified and failing to have insurance, last month.

Police had arrested Mr Pennant in January after he was spotted driving his car, which was dragging a lamppost behind it, in Aylesbury.

Released early after serving 31 days of his sentence, as part of his parole conditions Mr Pennant will have to wear an electronic tag. However, it has been reported that he is expected to be able to train and play for Birmingham City whenever manager Steve Bruce feels he is ready.

In a statement released today, Mr Pennant, said: "It's a relief to be out. I'm looking forward to putting on my football boots and start training again."
