Travel delays expected as Easter getaway begins
Travellers beginning journeys for the Easter holiday weekend have already begun to face disruptions.
Holidaymakers heading to Heathrow are facing delays after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge, close to Hayes and Harlington station. The Heathrow Express has reportedly been suspended and services to and from London Paddington are expected to be disrupted until around 2pm.
Widespread engineering works are also taking place on a number of railways, resulting in trains being replaced by buses during the holiday period.
The Highways Agency reported that a number of planned roadworks on some of England's major routes had been suspended. However, there are still some in place, including those on the western section of the M25 near Heathrow Airport, which is the busiest stretch of England's busiest motorway. Roadworks are also still in place at junction 6 on the M6 in Birmingham and will remain there throughout the weekend.
Around 17 million vehicles are expected to be travelling on the nation's roads during the holiday period. A record 2.2 million people will also be spending the holiday weekend overseas, with the most popular destinations being reported as New York, Dublin, Paris, Tenerife and southern Spain.
Many ski resorts are also sold out and north Africa was also reported to be a popular Easter holiday destination for British travellers, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) reported.
The Highways Agency said that today (Friday) looked set to be the best day of the holiday period, with most places predicted to be dry with some sunshine.
Temperatures as high as 18C (64F) had also been predicted for southern England.
The weather is expected to become more cloudy, with rain and drizzle throughout the eastern half of the country from tomorrow.

Childcare charges rise over summer holidays

Inmate Wayne McLeod Caught After Absconding From Prison
Police have caught 36-year-old prisoner Wayne McLeod, the third prisoner to abscond from jail over the bank holiday weekend. He went on the run from Springhill open prison in Grendon Underwood, Buckinghamshire, between 5.15pm and 8.15pm on Sunday, according to Thames Valley Police.

A four-week crackdown on troublemakers begins today as the Met Police get ready for trouble-makers ahead of this year's Notting Hill Carnival. They said that the eyes of the world turn to west London over the August bank holiday weekend and the Met works hard throughout the year to ensure carnival is not marred by crime.

Met Office forecasters are predicting a change to cold, wet and windy weather during the bank holiday weekend. Forecasters said that Saturday looks like being a fine day, but heavy rain, strong winds and much colder weather is expected to set in for Sunday and Monday, which could affect plans for travel and outdoor activities.
