Fischer flies to Iceland as national
Former world chess legend Bobby Fischer has walked free from a Japanese detention centre and is set to fly to Iceland today.
Mr Fischer spent eight months behind bars and is wanted in the US for violating sanctions against his playing in Yugoslavia in 1992.
The 62-year-old played an unforgettable match in Iceland against Boris Spassky, for which Fischer won $3.3 million.
Iceland’s government granted citizenship on 21st March to Fischer after Japanese authorities detained him in July on suspicion of travelling with an invalid passport.
As he waited to board a flight to Copenhagen Mr Fischer told reporters he wouldn’t be free until he got out of Japan.
He said: “This was not an arrest. It was a kidnapping cooked up by Bush and Koizumi. They are war criminals and should be hung.”
However, at a press conference yesterday, State Department Deputy Spokesman, Adam Ereli, said: “There are outstanding charges against Mr Fisher that we believe should be addressed in the US.”

Education minister Michael Gove has ignored expert advice from an independent panel, that he established, over the sale of school playing fields, the Guardian has reported. In the past 15 months the School Playing Fields Advisory Panel has opposed the sell-off of such facilities five times, but sales were still pushed through.
