Demolition work begins at notorious security centre

Work has begun in demolishing one of Northern Ireland’s most notorious security centres.

Demolition work on Castlereagh holding centre in east Belfast will see the site converted into a car park area to service the Castlereagh police complex.

Thousands of republican and loyalist paramilitaries were questioned at the site during the ‘Troubles’, before it eventually closed in December 1999 following recommendations made by the Patten Commission.

Sinn Féin Assembly member Michael Ferguson welcomed the demolition:

“This demolition while symbolic and welcome is not a substitute for an acceptable and accountable policing service,” Mr Ferguson said. “So much work still remains to be done before we can confidently say that the human rights abuses which reigned in that building will never be repeated again."

The Castlereagh holding centre that became notorious as 'the Troubles' escalted in the 1970s has been replaced by a state-of-the-art custody suite in Antrim.

This is now the designated facility for questioning paramilitary suspects following the Castlereagh closure.
