Councils begin ‘Kerbie’ cleanup across NI

Local councils have begun the biggest ever simultaneous rollout of kerbside recycling schemes ever undertaken in Northern Ireland.

More than 100,000 households across five council areas – Armagh, Ballymena, Banbridge, Belfast and Newtownabbey – are in the process of receiving kerbside boxes, or ‘Kerbies’, for the recycling of a wide range of household materials.

The biggest single ‘kerbie’ rollout is taking place in the Belfast City Council area, where 25,000 boxes currently are being distributed, primarily to inner city areas, with another 25,000 to follow later.

More than 37,000 households already have received a paper recycling bin, with a further 21,000 planned for rollout over the next year. Up to 55,000 households also will receive new brown bins for recycling garden waste.

The exact range of materials varies between the different council areas. In general, however, householders will be able to recycle paper, glass, cans, tins, plastic, textiles and old tools.

In all five council areas, social enterprise company Bryson House Recycling is delivering the service on behalf of the local authority, which is helping to sustain around 80 jobs.
