Four life sentences for man behind hostel fire deaths
A man has received four life sentences for starting a hostel fire in which four people died.
At the Old Bailey today, Mr Justice Fulford told Dudley, 31, that he must serve at least 28 years in prison. Dudley was also sentenced to ten years, to run concurrently, for the earlier arson attack.
Three men and a woman were killed in the fire started by Gary Dudley, 31, at the Fairlawn Hotel in Birmingham on Easter Sunday last April. Dudley, who was receiving methadone treatment for a drug addiction, had been living at the hostel since January 2004, when he set fire to his council flat.
During his trial, the court was told that Dudley had started the hostel fire because he was angry that he had not been re-housed.
The fire, which was started at the back of the Victorian building, claimed the lives of four of the hostel's other residents: Gary Parkes, 42; Gurmel Singh, 51; Anthony Campbell, 43; and Caroline Fry, 46 all died due to smoke inhalation.
Dudley was found guilty of the four murder charges and the arson charge at Birmingham Crown Court in December 2004.

BP Profits Slump

The British National Party (BNP) have almost trebled the number of local council seats held by the extreme right-wing party. The BNP won five seats in Burnley, taking their total number of councillors to eight and making them the official opposition on the Labour controlled council.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.
