PSNI urges community to help in fight against car crime
Police in west Belfast have urged local people to work in partnership with officers to help defeat car crime.
Following a weekend which saw nine arrests made by the specialist Auto Crime Team and nine stolen vehicles recovered, police have stressed that further successes can be gained through working together.
Constable Pete Connolly, Crime Prevention Officer for the West Belfast District, said he was appealing to everyone in the community to come forward with information about vehicle crime. “Police need the fullest possible support from the community to tackle this criminal behaviour and to reduce the threat it poses to community safety,” he said.
“People within the community must feel secure that they can give evidence to the courts about car criminals, knowing that they have the complete support of their neighbours.”
Incidents during the weekend included four car thefts following ‘creeper burglaries’ where houses were entered and keys for the cars were stolen.
Constable Connolly said he was advising vehicle users to take some basic steps to increase the security for their vehicles.
“Always lock the vehicle even when leaving it for the shortest of times,” he said. “Where possible secure the vehicle with a ‘Thatchams’ or ‘Sold Secure’ approved, locking device or immobiliser.
“At home, lock the front and back doors and be certain that windows are not vulnerable to a burglar. Keep vehicle keys away from doors and windows, where they are not obvious to a passing thief.”

Chief Constable confirms permanent car crime unit
Families of car crime victims have met PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde today in order to push for tougher measures against offenders. And their hopes were almost immediately fulfilled when Mr Orde confirmed that the temporary police unit set up to tackle car crime in the west Belfast and Lisburn areas is to be made permanent.

Warning Signs To Be Installed To Prevent Use Of Scramblers
Warning signs are to be installed across west Belfast to warn against the use of off-road vehicles being used in parks and public spaces. Police will also patrol hotspot areas to disrupt the dangerous, illegal activity and identify the people involved. The scheme has been launched by the West Belfast DPCSP and the PSNI.

Renewed Appeal For Information In West Belfast Murder Investigation
The PSNI's Major Investigation Team have renewed an appeal for information following the death of a man in west Belfast. A murder investigation was launched after a man was found seriously injured and unconscious in the Cupar Street area of the city on Wednesday evening, 6 March. The man passed away in hospital later that same night.

On Wednesday, 06 March, a man was found with serious injuries in the Cupar Street area just before 8pm. The man was treated at the scene by emergency services before being transferred to hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
